University of Nevada School of Medicine Students Visit ABILITY Prosthetics and Orthotics
Last week Travis and the entire team at ABILITY Prosthetics and Orthotics were happy to welcome some of UNSOM's students to show them around and educate them on ABILITY's P&O Practice. Travis started off by explaining a lot of the services ABILITY offers including orthotics for:
- Diabetic footwear
- Braces for such conditions as club feet, drop foot and cerebral palsy
- AFO (Ankle Foot Orthotic)
- Footwear and insoles
He then went into greater detail on prosthetics. A patient, George, was able to visit and show the students' first-hand how prosthetics work. George explained to them what a difference the prosthetic, which Travis fabricated, has made for him. Explaining how his golf game has improved and many other activities he enjoys.
Next, Travis made a mold of George's leg, explaining the process step by step to the students. He then explained the many options available to patients in the field of prosthetics. Including some of the new prosthetics available with built in batteries and microprocessors. These prostheses can be programmed via tablet and Bluetooth to give the patient a more fluid and comfortable gate.
Travis also went into more detail on how proper documentation by the prescribing doctor is so vital for providing patients the best quality care and equipment. Travis welcomes other interested doctors and medical students to contact him to learn more about prosthetics and orthotics as well.
